Our New Additions – Dairy Goats

WP_20141005_19_15_16_ProAlthough milk is not paleo sometimes you just have to have it!  For those who still include milk in their diet, this is the best way to go.  Raising your own goats naturally without grain or limited grain is a million steps above the store bought milk flavored water you buy from the store. WP_20141005_20_17_34_Pro

Homemade Natural Shoofly Pie without Sugar

Shoofly pie is one of the lesser known pies derived from Amish origins. The traditional pie contains enormous amounts of sugar and other non paleo ingredients.  Although not completely paleo, this pie comes pretty close and is perfect for gatherings or just a evening dessert.

Filling:

1 Cup of pure molasses (the most natural you can find)

1 egg

¾ teaspoon baking soda

¾ cup hot water

2 tablespoons of arrowroot powder

Topping:

1 cup coconut flour

½ cup tapioca flour

4 tablespoons honey

2 eggs

¼ cup butter

1 Paleo Pie crust

Directions:

Mix all the filling ingredients and pour into pie crust. Make sure arrowroot powder is all mixed in with no clumps. Mix coconut flour, tapioca flour, honey, and eggs. Add ¼ cup of butter, sliced and chilled, and mix in by hand until it forms little clumps. Pour crumbs on top of filling and bake at 400 degrees until the outside is firm but the center is still jiggly (about 30 minutes).

Easy Paleo Hamburgers

This is a perfect meal for anytime or occasion.  They are fast and easy to make and the ingredients store well for on the road.

Paleo Hamburgers:

Hamburger meat

Onions

Tomatoes

Iceberg lettuce

All natural mustard

Sour Cream (optional)

All natural pickles (optional)

Cheese Optional

Directions:

Cook hamburger meat into patties and season with salt and pepper. Peel off iceberg lettuce into large pieces. Stack a few pieces together and top with hamburger patty and all the other toppings. Top with a few more large pieces of iceberg lettuce.

Alternate variation: Use fermented pancake mix for buns (recipe coming soon)

Strawberry Frosting (without the sugar and artificial junk!)

An excellent natural alternative to the food coloring filled spread you buy at the store (tastes better too!)

Strawberry Frosting

1 ½ cups of coconut cream or raw cows milk cream

1 cup of strawberry puree (blend one cup of frozen strawberries until smooth)

¼ cup of honey

A few dashes of stevia

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in an electric mixer and mix until fluffy. Keep refrigerated until ready to use. Best if used within the same day.

Homemade Chocolate Chips

I hate to call anything that isn’t meat, veggies, fruit, or nuts paleo, but these chocolate chips are as “paleo” as you can get for the excellent taste!

1 cup butter or coconut oil

1/3 cup of chocolate

½ cup of honey

1 teaspoon arrowroot powder

Directions:

Melt oil in sauce pan over medium heat. Add chocolate and arrowroot powder and whisk in until all clumps are gone. Add honey and mix well. Let simmer while whisking constantly for about 5 minutes. Pour into 8” by 8” baking pan that is lined with parchment paper and refridgerate until hardened. Pull parchment paper out and cut into little squares or chunks.

Good Brands of Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar

Here are some brands of quality, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar that you can find in the grocery store or online.

Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar– Commonly found in any major grocery store or health food store.

Vitacost Apple Cider Vinegar- Found on vitacosts website. Easier to bulk order from them.

Fleishmanns Apple Cider Vinegar- A California based vinegar company.

All the above vinegars are good to use for home remedies and contain the mother.  Check your local grocery store or health food store for local brands that may contain the mother and are unpasteurized.

Benefits and Uses Of Raw, Unflitered Apple Cider Vinegar

If I had to chose one “miracle” food or supplement, it would be hands down raw, unflitered apple cider vinegar.  Vinegars are technically not paleo, but apple cider vinegar has so many great benefits that it is hard to pass up.  The kind that works the best is the raw, unfiltered vinegar. It is more expensive than the typical stuff you buy in the grocery, but it can be found through many health food stores and online.

Why unfiltered, raw, organic apple cider vinegar?

Unfiltered vinegar contains all of the “mother”, cloudy, web looking stuff that sits at the bottom, and the mother has enzymes and nutrition that makes the vinegar so useful.  Raw vinegar means it hasn’t been pasteurized at extremely high temperatures (why would you need to pasteurize something that nothing grows in?) and it still contains crucial enzymes.  Organic vinegar is just a plus, but may be more expensive.

Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar-

Sore throat remedy:  Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV in a glass of water.  Repeat for three times a day until symptoms are gone. Adding a little salt can help make it taste better.

Strep throat remedy: Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV in a glass of water with 2 teaspoons of cayenne and a dash of unprocessed sea salt. Sip throughout the day. Repeat 3 times a day until symptoms are gone.

Conditioner: Mix 1/3 ACV (cheap stuff will work for this) and 2/3 water in a large squeeze bottle. Use as a conditioner after using baking soda shampoo.

Sunburn relief: Put some ACV on a rag and rub it on your sunburn. After applying ACV apply coconut oil for a complete painless sunburn.

Pink Eye Remedy: Mix 1 teaspoon of ACV in 8 ozs of water and use as eye drops.

Tiredness: Mix 1 tablespoon of ACV in a small glass of water to regain some energy.

Cramps: ACV contains potassium and other minerals and will dissolve acid crystals in the blood.  Take 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 ozs of water with a dash of salt to relieve leg cramps.

Foot or skin fungus: Apply ACV to the yeast or fungus directly everyday until gone.

General recommendations:

For daily maintenance and weight loss take 2 teaspoons in 8 ozs of water 3X a day

For an acute condition take 2 tablespoons in 8ozs of water 3X a day

Natural Homemade Pink Eye Remedy

Below is the easiest and fastest home remedy to cure pink eye in humans and animals.

Take a black tea bag (with no additives) and put it in 1/4 cup of very hot water. Let steep until the tea is strong. Apply the tea bag to your eye and hold there for about 2 minutes. Use some of the remaining tea as eye drops (only a few drops). Repeat twice a day and results should quickly follow.

*Note: The remedy works better when you put the tea bag on your eye at the hottest temperature you can stand without burning yourself.

Natural Household Cleaners Part One

Here is the start of a list of natural household cleaners that are cheaper and easier to use than traditional chemical cleaners.  These alternatives won’t burn your skin or leave you sneezing after cleaning house.

White Vinegar

10% strength is better, but the standard vinegar will work fine too.  Use to clean showers, toilets, sinks, mirrors, windows, floors, counter tops, microwaves, refrigerators, as a disinfectant, or on any surface other than wood.

Baking Soda

Walmart usually sells bulk bags in the pool cleaning section.  Much like white vinegar, it can be used on most surfaces to clean and disinfect.
